PARALLELS BETWEEN YOUR DOG’S HEALTH & YOUR HEALTH
In a recent Washington Post article, dozens of large studies were mentioned where “scientists have found that ultra-processed foods are linked to higher rates of obesity, heart disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and colon cancer. A recent study of more than 22,000 people found that people who ate a lot of ultra-processed foods had a 19 percent higher likelihood of early death and a 32 percent higher risk of dying from heart disease compared with people who ate few ultra-processed foods.”
Now you may be thinking ‘well, the rent’s so damn high that I can’t afford to live too long,” but let’s hope not. Bless social security. Hail good health. Thank good genes. And look into senior living. My husband almost qualifies us to move into one of those 55+ communities. I can’t wait to hang with all the old-timers pushing 90. My favorite people are usually in that age group. As long as they like dogs. But, I digress.
Royal Society Open Science Journal recently found “Dogs eating dry food had significantly higher GlycA levels than dogs consuming other diet types.” Higher GlycA levels are linked to cancer and heart disease. GlycA gets a big fat F.
Now, the parallels go beyond food as evidenced by the NIH funding dog research like the Dog Aging Project – not some abusive study with lab animals, I assure you. Just a study of dogs in their homes with their families over their lifetime – to study what leads to longevity whether lifestyle, environment, food, stress, weight, exercise, natural rearing, limited toxins, and/or genes. Or all of the above, which I would argue.
You see the link between ultra-processed food and disease for our dogs and ourselves?
You see the connection between human health concerns and dog health concerns?
These studies highlight the need for intentional choices when it comes to what we eat and feed our animals.
